How to Plan Your LDS Temple Marriage

My clients are often overwhelmed with trying to plan their LDS Temple Weddings. They aren’t quite like traditional weddings, and can vary a lot depending on what time slot you reserve for your temple sealing. There are a lot of moving parts to consider that you wouldn’t normally need to worry about in a traditional wedding.

That’s why I’ve put together this list of 8 things to consider doing when planning your LDS Temple wedding day! This will hopefully help you make the most of your special day, while making beautiful memories with your soon-to-be-spouse!

  1. Schedule a first look session – LDS Temple weddings don’t have the traditional “walking down the aisle” moment. If you would like photographs of your first looks at each other, scheduling a First Look session is a special way to capture that intimate moment.
  2. Make sure your photographer knows when and where you will be exiting the temple – Temple exit photographs are a must! Make sure you tell your photographer in advance which doors you will be exiting from and roughly what time–and it doesn’t hurt to assign a family member to let the photographer know when you’re about to exit!
  3. Be sure to schedule enough time for formal photographs at the temple – Ask your photographer how long they suggest to schedule for formal photographs. If you have to go quickly from the family photographs directly to the luncheon or reception, and you’ve already done a First Look session, consider doing your formal photos before your sealing.
  4. Pick a venue close to the temple you will be sealed in – This will make setup, drive time, and your schedule so much easier!
  5. After family photos, send the family to prepare the luncheon – If you have scheduled a morning temple sealing, it’s common to have a luncheon with those that were invited to the temple. While you get your formal photographs taken, send your family to prep lunch, so it’s ready when you are done!
  6. After your photos, take a moment with your new spouse to write down what the sealer said during your ceremony – This is one of my favorite things to suggest to my couples. Everything happens so fast, likely by the end of the day, you won’t remember what the sealer said. Take a moment together after your photographs to write these things down, as well as the way you felt during the ceremony. You won’t regret it.
  7. Plan a ring exchange before the reception – If you have family that wasn’t able to attend the temple ceremony, consider doing a public ring exchange before the reception.
  8. Schedule getting ready photographs with your photographer – LDS Temple weddings often don’t include getting ready shots, because often the sealings are in the morning, and most of the getting ready happens inside the temple after the ceremony. If getting ready photographs are important to you, communicate this with your photographer.

Once you have your wedding date picked out, just call the temple and see what rooms and times they have available for you to schedule! Different temples have different room capacity, so keep that in mind when picking your temple.
