With all the planning that goes on for your wedding day, it can be easy to forget the small stuff — or not even think of it at all! That’s why I want to share with you a couple wedding planning tips to add to your list – from a Salt Lake City photographer’s perspective! A little bit of preparation now with these things will not only help your special day go smoothly, they will also help make sure your photographs turn out amazing!
• Don’t wear your smart watch for several months before the wedding. I know, we love our smart watches, but you don’t want a watch tan line the day of your wedding! If you must wear it, only wear it indoors. But it’s better to not wear it at all, to make sure you don’t forget it’s on your wrist and get a tan line.
• Hold a trial run with your hair and makeup team. Also make sure you do a trial run with any tanning, teeth whitening, skin care, hair coloring, etc. that you might be planning for your wedding day. The last thing you want is to have your skin react poorly to a new skin care routine, or to have your hair coloring not look the way you wanted. Give yourself plenty of time before the wedding (several months for some of these examples) to test these things out, so you can make adjustments if needed.
• If you’re serving dinner, make sure your caterer includes enough meals to feed your vendors. No one really wants their photo taken while they are eating, which makes dinner the perfect time for vendors to eat as well! This could include photographer, videographer, dj or band, and wedding planner.
• Learn how to tie a tie or bowtie (whichever the men will be wearing), and make sure at least one other groomsman knows how to as well. And PRACTICE! Don’t wait until the wedding week to learn and get good at it. A great resource for learning how to do this is Ties.com (and click here to learn how to fold a pocket square).
• Gather your details. Detail shots are one of the best ways to remember all the special elements of your wedding day. Any meaningful item you would like in your detail shots should be gathered together to be given to your photographer on your wedding day. Examples of great details are your jewelry, the rings, ring box, one of your invitations, shoes, tie/bowtie, etc.
• Use google maps to take a trip to your venue. We all know good ole’ google maps occasionally doesn’t take you to the right place. Make sure google maps will work correctly for your guests – and if it doesn’t, get some directions written out and sent to them.
• Learn about marriage licenses. Check your state’s requirements, as well as when the county clerk’s offices are open, when you can apply for it, and what information you need to bring to get your marriage license. Once you have it, keep it in a safe place, where you won’t forget it on wedding day.
