Most wedding dresses are white, right? But did you know that the color of white you can get your wedding dress in varies? Most brides don’t know this little secret, but I’m here to spill the beans: the color of white you pick can really impact your wedding day photographs!
One of my biggest pieces of advice for brides about to go wedding dress shopping is to choose a color of white that is not pure white! This could be ivory, cream, champagne, blush, or pearl colors.
Why do I suggest a color of white that is not pure white?
Pure white dresses often have blue in the shadows, and so are more difficult to photograph and edit in your photos. But an ivory or cream color dress will photograph so beautifully and help avoid those blue shadows. This goes for the groom’s shirt as well!
In this photo, as well as the photo above, this gorgeous bride’s dress was soft champagne color, so no editing of the dress was needed.
But what if the dress you fall in love with is pure white?
As you can see in this example, I can totally work with pure white dresses to remove the blue from the shadows and make them absolutely stunning in your photos (use the slider to see the before and after)! But it takes a lot of work and a lot of time to fix this in every singe photo of a full wedding day. With each wedding getting several hundred photos back, you can see how the time would add up! This means that your photos take a little longer to get back to you after the wedding day.
If you are absolutely in love with the idea of a dress in pure white, then please still get the dress you love! It can totally be edited to remove the blue in the shadows.
If you’re torn between pure white and another off-white color, my suggestion is to go for the cream, ivory, or other off-white! It will photograph so much better and help me get your photos back to you even faster because I won’t have to edit your dress in every photo!
Here are some perfect examples of pure-white wedding dresses I have edited to remove the blue tint from the shadows in the dress: (use the sliders to see the before and after)
This rule applies to the groom’s button up shirt as well! In these photos, you can see that the bride wore a dress that was not pure white, so no editing of the dress was needed. But the groom’s shirt still had to be edited in the sleeves and collar. If the groom likes a cream colored or off-white shirt, that will be the best for your photos!
At the end of the day, please remember – buy the dress you feel the most beautiful in and that you are in love with! I can totally work with whatever wedding dress color you choose. But if you’d like your photographer’s opinion on what color photographs the best, my answer is always going to be anything that is not pure-white!
